Painting & Re-Painting a Stone Fireplace

One of my first blog posts was about our dingy gray stone fireplace in our family room.  When we built the house, the installer told us to seal the stones with Thompson's Water Sealer. We did that & the color never came back to it's original light gray. Here is an old picture of it originally:

We didn't like it but lived with it for about 5 years. I then got the idea of painting it. That blog post is here.

Fast forward to 2016......I recently painted one of our bathrooms and used BM Balboa Mist paint which is a great griege.   I haven't blogged about this but here is a pic of the bathroom finished. I painted over the stripes that I did back in 2010:

So, since I had paint leftover from that project and I've been wanting to get rid of the yellow from the fireplace, I decided on a whim to gray wash it.  Actually was pretty easy to do and finished it on a Sunday afternoon.   I used about 1/2 paint to 1/2 water and painted it on with a brush. I then rubbed it with a rag to smooth it out.  Click here for a good tutorial from 'Life on Virginia Street' that helped me decide to try this project.  Here is a before/after to show you the difference:

All finished for now...
Happy Thursday!
