Are you a fan of dark floors?

A friend of mine & I were talking about hardwood. Dark hardwood.  She is considering putting it in her family room & down the hallway & I'd love to do put in our master bedroom. I know lots of people complain you can see all the dust & dirt, but what other pros/cons are there??  Some great examples of dark floors:

I'm pretty convinced that dark hardwood floors would look awesome.
How about you?

  1. Yes, you'll sweep more often, but the scratches are the worst. You'll see every scratch, which will break your heart. But I found I can cover these with one of the funiture markers they make to cover scratches. (hope I'm not making a mistake doing this, but I can't stand the scratches)

But, if you LOVE the look, you'll put up with the problems.

  3. I put dark wood floors in my family room which is separate from the rest of the house. Although they are only a few shades darker than the old medium red oak in the rest of the house, they are so hard to keep clean. Every little spot of dust shows, and scratches are the worst. I finally put felt on every piece of furniture, have a furniture marker on hand, and resolved that I must dust twice a day (well only once, because I can't be that good). I have had them for a year and decided to have a custom seagrass carpet made for the room to cover them.

  4. I have an oak hardwood now in my entry & diningroom & it basically has been maintenance free for 21 years. You guys are seriously making me re-consider a dark hardwood in the bedroom. Thanks for the comments!

  5. Hi Karen! Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad to be back to blogging. I just did a post on this topic the other day because I changed my hardwoods out to dark. I love them! To me, they're easier to keep. I personally like being able to see the dust and dirt so I can clean it up. It forces me to clean. I have a stick Shark vacuum which is super lightweight. I pull it out every day sometimes twice a day and quickly run it over the problem areas. I've never had a floor so easy to keep. No more sweeping. Then about once a week I mop with a Bona mop system. We have a low sheen which I think helps too. I already had felt under all my furniture. So far no scratches from furniture. But some from kids or who knows what. Haven't had to pull out the furniture pen yet. Good luck with whatever you decide!
