DIY Cell Phone Covers

The new iPhone 5 comes out in July later this summer & I can't wait.  Mostly because the phone I have now randomly likes to turn off on it's own which gets irritating and I am looking forward to all the features of the new phone.  Soo, when I found this amazing tutorial a few weeks back, I saved it so I can use it for my new phone.  Here is the finished version of Dwellings By DeVore. Check out her incredible blog for lots of great DIY projects & tips:

Paint & Stain ♥

I just can't seem to get enough spray painting & staining in lately. I never realized that staining was as easy as painting. Actually, you just paint the stain on. Duh. I am sure there are several experienced bloggers out there who already knew that, but me? I'm still learning. And, the best part is, it's easy. The most time consuming part is waiting for the stain to dry overnight.

Thrifting in Cincinnati

There are several Goodwill stores here in Cincinnati that are awesome & have great sales. That said, I just recently discovered a new thrift store that has been here for 25 years....what??  I can't believe I haven't been to this one before but it is great. And, 25% off on Monday's.  If interested, it's Valley Thrift on Reading Road.  The prices seem to be better than GW, there is more merchandise and it is very organized. They also seem to have a ton of stuff that has TJ Maxx tags on it.  Love that!!

Fan Complete & Congrats!

I promise this is the last 'fan' post!  The drum ceiling lighting kit arrived in 2 days which was impressive.  My husband put it up & it looks great. Here was my inspiration pic:

On a random note, congrats to all of the 2011 graduates.  Hard work does pay off & you are to be commended!

With that said, I'd like to leave you with a video of a song that was sung at the recent graduation we attended by the College of Music vocal ensemble. We thought it was relevant for the day. TGIF!!

Transforming Oak to Mahogany

We have a very nice bedroom set that was given to us from my in-laws as a wedding gift. I still love it, just not the orange-ish oak color that it has turned. Here is a picture of piece of furniture that I hoped to mimic:

I  love the rich dark mahogany color & wanted to try to duplicate this on our bedroom dressers.
Here is a before shot:

Here are the progress pics which this took a little longer than expected. I originally picked up the wrong stain but my favorite Lowe's paint guy helped me get the right stuff. I used Minwax Polyshades in Bombay Mahogany in the satin finish:

Below it is lightly sanded to remove the previous varnish:

I am planning to change out the knobs so we had to fill the holes & sand.

The drawers are dovetailed & nice quality:

3 coats of stain on & lightly sanded between each:

And here is it all finished!!  Let's look at the 'before' one more time:

That mirror used to be orange too but a little spray paint changed that!

I bought the ring pulls online from here & the longer drawer pulls were at Lowe's.
I thought about taking down all my jewelry hanging from the hooks under the mirror, but thought why? I don't have anywhere to hang the jewelry without it all getting tangled so function out rules looks here.
I have a piece of glass ordered for the top & will be using this tray also:

And I will continue this project on the coordinating chest, but I was too excited to post this.  Time consuming, but not a hard project at all. Do you have some oak that needs an update?

Latest Marble Find

If you read this blog, you know I love marble.  Check out my latest marble find from my fav Goodwill!   It needs a good cleaning & I am still trying to decide what paint finish would look best.   The marble is in nice shape & I just love the pillars.

I will probably be putting this in my 'shop' in case you are interested.
The dimensions are approximately 16" diameter x 2' high.
Happy Wednesday!

Ceiling Fan Complete....almost!

I blogged about re-working my ceiling fan here, and am happy to say it's just about finished. I am going back/forth regarding the drum shade. Let's start with the 'before' pic:

Painting the fan was really easy since I left it hanging to paint the base of the fan and used a sponge brush. I removed the blades & primed them first and then spray painted them white.

Now on to my dilemna with the shade. Do I buy this one shade/light online?:

Do I go with this standard drum shade (temporarily attached)?

Or do I make one??  We did make a drum shade for our dining room.....decisions decisions! If you have an old ceiling fan that needs an update, you should go for it!
Happy Tuesday!
UPDATE:  I've decided to buy the lamp shade light kit online. It should be here within the next few days. Yes!

Love the Spring

After what feels like 34 days of straight rain, it was really nice to have a sunny Mother's Day. Hope all of you enjoyed your day as much as we did. Around our house in the spring, it gets noisy with lots of geese & birds chirping. Every year, we have more & more bird nests around. Just a few shots of them!

Happy Monday!
